Dr. William J. Smith, 85, of Eau Claire died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, December 21, 2005, at Clairemont Nursing Home. He was born in Hartford, Wisconsin on May 17, 1920, the son of Walter J. and Louise E. (Wolf) Smith.
William proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II in the South Pacific until his honorable discharge on October 21, 1945. He received his undergraduate degree from UW-Madison, and his DDS degree from the Marquette University School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Eau Claire for over 40 years.
William married Helen E. Roznowski of Green Bay, WI, on April 19, 1952, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Green Bay.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, VFW Post #305, Knights of Columbus John F. Kennedy Council #1257 and the American Dental Association.
William is survived by his loving wife, Helen “Beautiful”; three daughters, Kathryn (Barry) Bailiff of West Bend, WI, Shelley (Randy) Puls of Onalaska and Carolyn Smith of Mpls, MN; two sons, Greg (Jeanette) Smith of Onalaska, WI, and Paul (Annie) Schmidt of Bloomington, MN; fourteen grandchildren, Ryan, Andrew, Melanie and Paul Bailiff, Daniel, Adam and Michael Puls, Erik, Laura, and Sean Smith, Drew, Quinn, Cameron and Lleyton Schmidt; and a sister, Louise (Robert) Natrop of Kaukauna, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Kathleen McFaul.
William was an avid sportsman who enjoyed the outdoors including yearly hunting excursions to Colorado and numerous fishing trips. His legacy for this passion was passed on to his children and grandchildren.
William, Dad, and Grandpa, thanks for all the love, guidance and warm memories which we will always hold dear in our hearts. We know you cherished our times together as a family. You are and always will be simply “the best .”
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, December 23, 2005, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Eugene A. Klink celebrating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Friday at the church. Lenmark Gomsrud Linn Funeral&Cremation Services is serving the family.
