Notes for Vernon Nicolas GREEN
Vernon N. Green, age 83, formerly of Menomonie, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2002, with his family at his side.
Vernon was born on Sept. 10, 1918, in Elk Mound, the son of the late Anton Green and Margaret (Michelbook) Green. He attended Elk Mound High School where he was an accomplished musician and active in oratory and drama. Vernon also attended Vocational School of Police Science and Law Enforcement.
On April 20, 1974, Vernon married Doris (Karns) Green at the Little Brown Church in Iowa. The couple resided for many years in Menomonie. While in Menomonie, Vernon was a long time member of the Moose Lodge and after serving in several offices, including president, he was honored into the Pilgrims, the highest honor of the Moose Lodge. Vernon spent countless hours volunteering his services at the Moose Lodge.
In 1994, the couple moved to DeForest. In DeForest, the couple resided in a wonderful retirement community where they met and socialized with many dear friends. Vernon especially enjoyed the pool games and woodworking at the recreation center. In 2000, Vernon and Doris moved to Plymouth.
Vernon held many jobs prior to joining the Menomonie Police Department in 1951. He worked his way through the ranks until becoming chief of police in 1962. Vernon retired in 1975 from the Police Department. He continued with law enforcement for several years after his retirement, working as a deputy sheriff and bailiff in Dunn County. Even after his days in law enforcement, he was known and loved as "Chief" by many.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; a brother, George (Agnes) Green of Stoughton; seven children, Gerald (Lois) Green of Stoughton, Linda (Gary) Jahn of Phoenix, Ariz., Ron (Bernie) Bien of Menomonie, Robert (Donna) Duffy of Grafton, Va., Linda (Ron) Bussey of Nashville, Tenn., Barry (Barb) Duffy of Scandia, Minn., and Sue (Jim) Peterson of Plymouth; 10 grandchildren, Richard Green, Bekke White, Jennifer Robbins, Brian Duffy, Kristin Eichorst, Jill Moldrem, Craig Skaare, Daniel Duffy, and Chelsea and Brady Peterson; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
