Herlaugsstall
(støl, seter = summer cabin with grazing land in the mountains)
Place belonging to Svinbøl*. At Gollo we read about that Ola Olsson Gollo came to Herlaugsstaul in 1782. This is the first time this place is mentioned. The name tells us that the place probably was established by a man named Herlaug, but nothing else. First in 1828 we find any more about Herlaugsstaul. About 1826 Ola Neridsson came to Herlaugsstaul. He was born about 1796 at Marheim and was in 1821 married to Birgit Sveinsdatter, writer from Asland, born 1790. Children: 1. Aslaug, born 1821, probably died. 2. Birgit, born 1822, married 1853 Ola Olsson Bjørntuft, son Ola Persson. 3. Nils, born 1824. 4. Aslaug, born 1828, r. t. A. 1861. 5. Torstein, born 1833 r. t. A. 1860. Ola and Birgit lived all their days at Herlaugsstaul. Ola died there in 1857, 61 years old and Birgit died in 1859, 69 years old. (r. t. A. = “reiser til Amerika” of traveled to America”)
In 1865 there are 2 cattle and 5 småfe (lesser animals like sheep and goats). They grew 1/2 barrel of barley and 2 barrels of potatoes. Tov Sørenson, the son of Søren Bentsson Kvistrudhagen lived for some time at Herlaugsstaul. He married Elen Øysteinsdatter in 1844. They came to Kvistrud-Hagen and their children are mentioned there. After these people no one lived at Herlaugsstaul, which now belongs to Håvardsrud.
* A cotters place under the farm Hegard. It appears that this place was bought and sold several times in the early 1800's, and that many families lived there in that periode. (
