-----
Alvin started to buy a farm (“Hickory Farm”?) before Beverly was born, just before the depression. When the depression hit they couldn’t afford the farm anymore so moved in with Halvor Veum, his Dad.
From 1930 Atlas and Farmers’ Directory of Trempealeau County, Wisconsin: VEUM, Alvin. Rt 1, Wife - Nora; Child - Beverly. Owned 27 acres in section 30; also owned 120 acres in section 31. Mail came from Independence P O. Lived in the county for 26 years. Had a telephone. Farm was called “Hickory Farm”
The day before Alvin died he drove to Bloomer to see his brother Roy who was sick.
Paid $1,000 dollars for their house at 611 Cochrane in Eau Claire, WI. There was only one faucet in house, which was in the corner where the kitchen stove was. They had no indoor bathroom, only an outhouse in the garage. Slop from the kitchen was poured into an old boiler that was buried in the yard.
Beverly said Alvin died of a heart attack, caused by his smoking, which aggravated the angina he suffered from.
