Obituary:
MRS. HALVOR VEUM
Mrs. Halvor Veum of Borst Valley died at the Community Hospital in Whitehall February 21 at eight o’clock in the evening, depriving the community of one of its most beloved citizens. Mrs. Veum became suddenly ill the Friday morning previous. A Whitehall physician was called and when it was discovered that her condition was serious, she was moved to the hospital where she underwent a major operation at 10 o’clock that evening.

Growing suddenly worse Sunday afternoon, her family was called but none was able to reach her before she died, a severe snow storm having blocked all roads. Only her daughter Lillian, who had been with her since she entered the hospital, was at her bedside at the time of her demise.

Before her marriage Mrs. Veum was Anna Benetta Olson. She was the daughter of Jorgen and Berget Lund Olson, born in Chimney Rock September 26, 1871. She grew to womanhood in that community and was married on May 9, 1893. After living two years with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Veum bought the farm that is still the family home.

Surviving the deceased are her husband and seven children; namely, Roy of Bloomer, Henry and Alvin, Eau Claire, James of Allen and Lionel at home, Julia, Mrs. George Gunderson of Borst Valley, and Lillian, Mrs. Alvin Kloss at Eleva. There are also 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two children preceded her in death. One sister, Mrs. John Dahl of Eau Claire, three brothers, Olaus, WIlliam and Joachim Olson, besides other relatives and a host of friends also survive.

Funeral services were held February 25 from the home at one o’clock and the Chimney Rock church at two o’clock, of which she had been a lifelong member and a devoted worker in the Ladies Aid and Young People’s Society. The Rev. A. Wichmann officiated, and interment was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Wichmann sang “Den Store Vede Flok” at the church and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Rhode sang, “In the Garden” and “In the Sweet By and By.” Pallbearers were the deceased’s five sons and her brother Olaus, who makes his home with the family. Flowers were carried by her two nieces, Audrey Olmstead of Eau Claire and Mary Jane Olson of Eleva.

Mute testimony of the high esteem in which Mrs. Veum was held was evidenced by the relatives and friends who filled the church at the last rites in spite of almost impassable roads.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hanson and Mr. and Mrs. John Dahl of Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Aleck Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson, Miss Josephine Hanson, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ulness and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ulness of Mondovi; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hintgen of Arcadia, and Mr. and Mrs. Myron Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Olson, Independence.

Card of Thanks
The family wishes to thank all who so kindly comforted us in our bereavement, especially the Rev. A. Wichmann, the singers and those who gave floral tributes and memorials. We also extend our thanks to the highway commissioners of Eau Claire and Trempealeau counties for having the roads opened so as to enable the families of the deceased to reach the home upon news of our beloved’s death and later attend the last rites.
Halvor Veum and Children.
