Notes for Angeline Ann (Sister Norbertine, SSND) SCHMIDT
S.S.N.D. - School Sister of Notre Dame, a teaching and missionary order of vowed Catholic women.

Angeline was the oldest of the family and entered the Notre Dame Convent in September 1905 at age sixteen. The following are letters she wrote home to Eau Claire:

April 17, 1908
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
With May greetings for the approaching feast, and hoping the Easter Rabbit will be generous to you all.
I remain your loving sister,
Angeline

Dear Friend Mary,
While I have only a few minutes time to spare so I thought I might drop you a few lines. It certainly feels lonesome after you girls left us yesterday. I wish I could have gone with you but I thought I dare not. I will not send my address yet for I think I am going to leave. I will write you a letter when I have more time. Angela.

My dear Parents, Sisters and Brothers,
This the fourth of July, gives me an opportunity to write to you.
First of all I will tell you more about my trip to Milwaukee. Seven of the sisters stepped in the train at Chippewa among them two I know.
The sisters asked me to sit with them and didn’t give me time to feel blue. We did not have to change cars. At one of the stations we had to change coaches otherwise we had a pleasant trip.
We arrived at the dear Mother house by four o’clock. There I met many of my old friends. I was only in the Mother house a short time when two candidates from Menasha came in.
This evening after dark we will have fireworks.
The Reception of this year will take place between the twentieth and twenty fifth of August. About seventy two expect to receive the holy habit this year.
Dear parents. I beg you to pray for me that I may be among the chosen ones this year.
I hope you all will have a good time on the Fourth. I suppose Josie will be very busy at the picnic.
My dear parents you may be assured that I will not forget you in my prayers.
With this hearty greetings to all the Sisters, relatives and a bushel of love with a hearty “Qnvivjnlst Goff” for all you have done for me. I remain in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Your grateful child,
Angela

1930 Letter
I was born December 19, 1889 at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. At Baptism my dear parents chose for me the name Angela, a name of which I was always real proud. God sent eight children to brighten the Schmidt family hearth. Of these, three offered their lives to the special service of God,—my dear sister Josephine becoming a nurse in the Franciscan Order of Springfield, Illinois, and my brother George joining the Benedictine Fathers at Collegeville, Minnesota. He was ordained a priest July 11, 1927.
I attended the Sacred heart School at Eau Claire at that time taught by our loved Order. It was always my greatest delight to be with the Sisters. As we lived a great distance from school we were obliged to take our noonday lunch at school. This gave me many an opportunity to help good Sister Sixta in the Convent kitchen. I still vividly and happily recall the many edifying and beautiful things Sister told me about convent life and especially about the life of a Sister of Notre Dame. Next to my own loved parents, I owe the grace of my vocation to dear, good Sister Sixta.
After completing the eighth grade of Sacred Heart School, Sister Superior M. Barsaba took me to the Aspiranture where I continued my studies, and became more and more imbued with a high regard for the religious life and an ardent longing to dedicate myself to God. This first year in the convent sped away entirely too fast but the sweet recollections therof shall never be effaced from my memory. On the feast of St. Augustine, 1906 I received the bonnet and just one week later was missioned to St. Alphonsus, Chicago where I assisted in the various grades. The second year of my Candidature I spent at St. Mary’s Menasha. My hallowed novitiate days began August 25, 1908. Already during the Christmas holidays of the same year I had to leave the dear Novitiate and go to St. Clements, Ontario. After taking first vows, July 25, 1910 I was sent to St. Joseph’s, Milwaukee where I spent ten happy years. It was during this period too that I had the happiness of taking my perpetual vows, July 22, 1917. In 1920 I was transferred to Galion, Ohio, and after six years was called to Peoria, Illinois. After three years at the latter mission I returned to Galion for one year. At the opening of the 1930 school term I was missioned back to St. Joseph’s, Peoria.
